The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has reiterated its dedication to tackling the growing issue of illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey, through a comprehensive approach.

After a meeting between Minister Samuel Jinapor and key stakeholders, all regional ministers have been instructed to ramp up enforcement against illegal mining activities in their regions.
The surge in illegal mining, which has become a pressing national issue, has led various religious groups, professionals, and other organizations to urge the government to take swift action to curb the problem and safeguard the environment.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Lands Ministry emphasized that regional ministers are now tasked with intensifying their enforcement efforts within their jurisdictions to address and manage illegal small-scale mining activities.
“Additionally, the Minerals Commission will enhance our reformative efforts, particularly, through ramping up the establishment of responsible and legal community mining schemes which have regard to the preservation of our nation’s environment and landscape.
“The government remains steadfast and committed to continue to restore order and ensure that mining activities are conducted sustainably and legally in the national interest.
We entreat all and sundry, to support this effort to enable us to protect our environment, preserve our water bodies, and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come,” the statement further said.
