The government has announced plans to add 3,000 beds to health facilities in the Ashanti Region by 2025, upon the completion of major health facilities and the Agenda 111 hospital projects.

Minister of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, highlighted this initiative during the commissioning ceremony for the Fomena and Kumawu hospital projects, stating that it aims to improve healthcare delivery in the region.

The 120-bed Kumawu and Fomena hospital projects, initiated in 2015, have faced delays, causing concern among local residents who have repeatedly called for the projects’ completion.

Dr. Okoe Boye assured the public that additional ongoing hospital projects in the Ashanti Region will also be completed and put into use to further enhance healthcare services.

“By 2025, when Mr President you will be handing over power, the Ashanti Region is expected to have about 2000 beds added to their health infrastructure capacity. If you add those on Agenda 111 list for the Ashanti Region, you are looking at close to 3000 beds addition within eight years,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo called for the proper utilization of the projects, encouraging community support.

“I urge the community to hold healthcare managers accountable for ensuring the facility’s proper utilisation and timely maintenance which are vital for sustained healthcare provision. Community support and commitment to the facility managers are indispensable.

This project also includes a 2-year post-completion maintenance and training programme. Therefore, I encourage the Ghana Health Service to collaborate closely with the contractor’s maintenance team to ensure that the hospital’s effective upkeep,” he said.
