Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has inaugurated the commencement of construction for Ghana’s first government-owned tertiary-level institution dedicated exclusively to training Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) educators.

The Namburugu STEM College of Education, situated in Karaga, Northern Region, aims to equip individuals interested in teaching STEM subjects in Senior High and other schools nationwide.

Addressing attendees at the ceremony on July 14th, 2024, Vice President Bawumia underscored the government’s steadfast commitment to modernizing the education sector in response to the evolving demands of the 21st century.

He highlighted that the establishment of this tertiary STEM training institution reaffirms the government’s determination in this regard.

“This government continues to invest heavily in the Education sector. This commitment is evident in many ways, including the provision of Free Senior High School Free TVET education; building new, modern ICT-based schools; construction of specialized STEM High Schools, one of which is not too far from here, in Kpasinkpe, and recently, the supply of Tablets to students in SHS.

“Today’s ceremony to signal the construction of a tertiary institution to train instructors for our schools is further evidence of our determination to prepare our children for the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” he stated.

Deputy Minister of Education, Honorable Rev Ntim Fordjour, urged the contractors to prioritize delivering a high-quality project for the Namburugu STEM College of Education within the shortest possible time.

He revealed that the college will include accommodations for both male and female students, an advanced 800-seater auditorium, an ICT center, and residential quarters for the Principal, Vice Principal, and other educators.

“This institution marks a significant milestone as a world-class training facility, providing essential skills and knowledge for those who will educate our children,” he stressed.

Since 2017, the government has overseen the establishment of several STEM schools across Ghana, including the Awaso STEM School in the Western Region, Abomosu STEM School in the Eastern Region, Bosomtwe Girls STEM School, Bosomtwe STEM School in the Ashanti Region, Accra High School (Engineering only) in the Greater Accra Region, and Kpasemkpe STEM School in the North East Region.

These institutions have successfully integrated into the mainstream education system, admitting their inaugural batches of students.
