The Government of Ghana is stepping up efforts to promote the large-scale commercial production of eco-friendly pozzolana cement, as part of its broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported building materials and accelerate the shift toward sustainable infrastructure development.

Speaking at the opening of the Biannual Ministry of Science and Technology Forum in Accra, the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, highlighted both the environmental and economic benefits of pozzolana cement.

He emphasized the need for political commitment and cross-sector collaboration to mainstream the use of pozzolana in Ghana’s construction sector.

“I don’t think many developers in this country are using pozzolana cement anymore,” the Minister remarked. “We need the political will to promote it because it is environmentally friendly and ideally suited for our infrastructure projects. There is no better cement we could be using.”

Pozzolana cement, which is locally produced and environmentally sustainable, has long been championed as a viable alternative to conventional cement, offering reduced carbon emissions and improved affordability.

Pozzolana cement, made from locally sourced materials such as clay and volcanic ash, emits fewer carbon emissions compared to traditional Portland cement and offers a cost-effective solution for large-scale infrastructure projects.

Despite its potential, usage remains low due to limited awareness, industrial uptake and access to financing.

Minister Murtala Mohammed disclosed that his ministry will work with key stakeholders across government, industry, academia, and research institutions to bridge the gap between innovation and commercialization.

“Many institutions have great ideas, but lack the resources to bring them to life. It is crucial that we come together—government, industry and academia to build the necessary linkages and support systems,” he stated.

The renewed push for pozzolana cement aligns with the country’s broader green economy agenda and presents an opportunity to develop local industry capacity, create jobs and improve the affordability of sustainable construction materials.
