Felix Kwakye Ofosu, acting spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, has assured that the government will implement measures to prevent future food shortages under the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.

This comes after GHS 200 million was released about two weeks ago to address existing shortfalls.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, January 2, Ofosu pointed to poor planning and implementation of the policy by the previous government, which led to a situation where schools reopened without sufficient food supplies.

“Beyond the GHS 200 million released about a week ago, the previous administration’s poor planning meant that schools reopened without food for the students,” he said.

Ofosu also noted that despite requests from stakeholders, particularly headmasters, to delay the reopening of schools to allow time for food supplies, the request was denied, resulting in the lack of provisions when schools resumed.

“So upon taking office, President Mahama took decisive action and within a few days, he ordered that food be evacuated to the schools. In addition to that, GHS200 million was released to the various schools through the Ghana Education Service to procure food for the students,” Kwakye Ofosu added.

Kwakye Ofosu assured that going forward, adequate measures will be put in place to ensure that there is enough food to feed the students.

“So for now, that has been done and going forward, adequate measures will be put in place to ensure that we have enough food to feed the students,” he noted.
