The Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Agyei, has announced that the government has settled a total of GH¢809 million in outstanding payments to the contractor working on the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway project. The final tranche was disbursed on August 4, 2025, paving the way for the contractor’s return to site after weeks of stalled work.

The resumption comes as a major relief to thousands of commuters who rely on the busy stretch daily and had been forced to endure severe traffic congestion in recent weeks. The Pokuase–Nsawam Highway forms a crucial link between Accra and the Eastern and Ashanti regions, making it one of Ghana’s most important transport corridors.

The timely intervention also follows a strong ultimatum issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which had threatened to suspend operations by Wednesday, August 20, if the government failed to resolve the impasse and restore construction works.

Speaking on Peace FM on Monday, August 18, Mr. Agyei confirmed that the government had honoured its financial obligations in three separate instalments.

  • “On July 24, we made the first part payment.
  • On July 30, we released the second tranche.
  • And on August 4, the final disbursement was made.

Altogether, this amounted to about GH¢809 million, which fully covers the contractor’s request,” he disclosed.

Meanwhile, Sedem Afenyo, the Member of Parliament for Amasaman, has welcomed the development, noting that work on the project must now continue without further interruptions.

“Some weeks back, we met with the engineer and the three Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs) whose jurisdictions are directly affected by this highway. We were given assurances that the issues would be addressed. Now that payments have been made, I am hopeful that we will not see the project stall again,” he told Citi News.

Commuters and transport operators are cautiously optimistic that the renewed works will ease congestion and accelerate the completion of the project, which has long been plagued by funding delays and traffic disruptions.
