The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced plans to install about 1,500 new transformers nationwide by the end of March as part of efforts to stabilise electricity supply and strengthen the country’s power distribution network.
The transformers will be deployed by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to address power fluctuations reported in several parts of the country and improve the reliability of the national grid.
Dr. Jinapor disclosed this during the launch of ECG’s new corporate strategy in Accra, describing the intervention as a critical step toward enhancing electricity distribution and meeting growing consumer demand.
According to the Minister, although ECG had initially planned to procure the transformers independently, the government intervened after it became apparent that the company might lack the financial capacity to fully fund the acquisition.
He noted that a stable electricity supply remains a key expectation of consumers, particularly at a time when electricity tariffs are increasing.
“Consumers expect reliable electricity, especially when tariffs are going up. It should not be the case that immediately you connect to the grid, the power goes off,” he said.
Dr. Jinapor explained that the energy sector is highly capital-intensive and that the procurement of infrastructure, such as transformers, requires rigorous and detailed procurement processes due to the technical specifications and financial outlay involved.
He assured that the deployment of the transformers will begin at the end of March, with some ageing equipment also expected to be replaced to improve the overall reliability of the distribution network.
Meanwhile, Acting Managing Director of ECG, Julius Kpekpena, described the newly launched corporate strategy as a roadmap to transform the company’s operational efficiency and strengthen its financial sustainability.
According to him, the strategy prioritises operational modernisation, greater use of technology to enhance service delivery, and measures to improve the utility’s revenue mobilisation.
Mr. Kpekpena added that ECG will intensify efforts to clamp down on power theft and illegal electricity connections, which are long-standing challenges that continue to undermine the company’s financial performance and operational stability.
The planned transformer deployment and the new corporate strategy form part of broader reforms aimed at improving power reliability and restoring financial discipline within Ghana’s electricity distribution sector.
