Graham Potter has been officially appointed as the new manager of West Ham United, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract following the dismissal of Julen Lopetegui.
The 49-year-old, who was last in charge at Chelsea, expressed his enthusiasm for the role.
“It’s a proud day to be head coach of this amazing club. Big tradition, big history, big expectations, big challenge,” said Potter. “It’s a bit like Christmas for the adults. I didn’t get the best sleep last night just from excitement. I’m looking forward to meeting the players and supporters and getting started.”
Potter steps in to manage a struggling West Ham side currently in 14th place in the Premier League, only seven points above the relegation zone with just six wins so far this season.
Despite his turbulent Chelsea spell, Potter is optimistic about the challenge and believes in building a team the fans can be proud of.
“My experience is that if you can build a team recognisable on the pitch that supporters identify with, that’s the key,” he said.
His first game in charge will be an FA Cup clash with Aston Villa on Friday, followed by a Premier League home game against Fulham.
