The Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has announced its plans to join the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra in a protest against illegal mining on Friday, October 11.

In a statement dated October 7, GRASAG expressed concern over the detrimental effects of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

The association emphasized its commitment to joining the Catholic Church in advocating for stronger actions from the government, civil society, and all stakeholders to safeguard Ghana’s lands, water bodies, and natural resources from further harm.

A press release from the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, issued on October 4, revealed that the Church will collaborate with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious, Ghana, and the Catholic Lay Faithful and Professionals to lead an Environmental Prayer Protest Walk Against Galamsey.

The Church underscored that the purpose of the protest is to raise awareness of the negative and destructive consequences of galamsey and to urge the government to take immediate action to address the issue.

GRASAG’s statement aligns with that of the Church, calling on all Ghanaians to participate in this peaceful demonstration to amplify the demand for prompt and effective measures to combat illegal mining.
