Former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hannah Tetteh, has urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to prioritize a comprehensive overhaul of the Electoral Commission (EC) as part of his resetting agenda.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, December 24, Tetteh highlighted concerns about the EC’s conduct and stressed the urgent need for reforms to rebuild public trust in the institution.

Her call aligns with ongoing discussions on ensuring credible elections, with stakeholders advocating for measures to enhance the EC’s independence and accountability.

Tetteh emphasized that addressing systemic challenges within the EC should be a key focus of the incoming administration’s governance agenda.

“The way in which they have engaged has not exactly allowed people to have confidence in their objectivity and neutrality, and I think that one of the lessons for the commission after the election should be how to also do a reset because if they don’t do a reset, I worry what people’s perceptions will be of the EC’s neutrality and competence in the elections that we have coming in the future.

“There has to be a significant review about what it will do differently to improve public confidence because it is currently at an all-time low.”
