Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee and Member of Parliament for Nabdam, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, has strongly criticised attempts to politicise the recent assault on healthcare workers at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ridge.

His reaction comes after the Minority in Parliament alleged that those involved in the attack—captured in a viral video were affiliated with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The incident occurred when relatives of an accident victim clashed with emergency staff over alleged delays in treatment. The confrontation escalated, leading to the alleged assault of a nurse by social media activist Ralph St. William. Hospital authorities subsequently called in the police.

Following the attack, the Minister of Health visited the facility, condemned the act, and promised tighter security. However, he drew criticism after he was later seen shaking hands with the alleged perpetrator.

While acknowledging the Minority’s condemnation of the assault, Dr. Nawaane described the attempt to link the suspects to the NDC as “very unfortunate.”

“They are saying the perpetrators are aligned with the NDC or have sympathies toward the party. I thought that given what happened, we would unite as a nation and condemn the act. Yet, they are trying to politicise it. That is very unfortunate,” he told journalists at a press conference on Wednesday, August 20, 2026.

Dr. Nawaane emphasised that the government had already taken swift action, noting that the Health Minister not only denounced the attack but also commissioned a probe into the matter.

“Inasmuch as it is an unfortunate situation, I want to assure medical staff that the Health Committee of Parliament stands firmly with them in this trying moment. We will ensure that the case is thoroughly investigated and that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” he assured.
