A heavy police presence is reported in Walewale as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) conducts a rerun of its parliamentary primary today, Monday, September 9.

The rerun is between Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru and the sitting Member of Parliament, Hajia Lariba Zuweira.

The High Court in Tamale annulled the results of the December 2023 primary on September 2, leading to today’s rerun. Dr. Kabiru initially won the primary with 345 votes, narrowly defeating Zuweira, who received 338 votes.

Zuweira’s dissatisfaction led to an injunction and subsequent annulment of the results by the High Court.

Originally scheduled to be held at Walewale Park, the rerun venue was changed to Walewale Pentecost Church along the Tamale-Bolgatanga highway without prior notice to the candidates. This unexpected change has raised concerns for Dr. Kabiru.

“This morning, my agents went to the astroturf and there was no sign of any electoral process going on there and we were informed that the venue was changed to the Pentecost Church and I find that to be most unfortunate but I want to give them the benefit of the doubt that the reason for the change is cogent.”
