Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is confident that midfielder Enzo Fernandez will smoothly integrate with the squad during the US pre-season tour, despite ongoing disciplinary issues related to alleged racism.

Fernandez, 23, faced criticism after the French Football Federation accused him of singing a “racist and discriminatory” chant following Argentina’s Copa America win. The chant allegedly questioned the heritage of France’s black and mixed-race players.
Chelsea teammate Wesley Fofana condemned the video on Instagram as “uninhibited racism.”
FIFA is investigating the matter, and Fernandez has since apologized. Maresca, appointed as Chelsea’s manager in May, minimized the potential impact of the controversy.
“It is quite easy in terms of the player doing a statement to apologise. The club did the same, so I don’t think there is something to add in terms of the situation. It is already clear and clarified,” Maresca said.
He continued, “I don’t think there are any problems at all. They are all human beings. I don’t think there are any bad intentions from any of them. Enzo clarified the situation, the club the same, so there is nothing to add.”
Chelsea captain Reece James, who joined Maresca in previewing the team’s upcoming match against Wrexham in Santa Clara, assured he is prepared to handle any potential issues that may come up.
“It’s a difficult situation, and Enzo has acknowledged he was wrong and quickly put his hand up to apologize to the club, team, and people offended,” James stated.
James noted that while Fernandez has not yet arrived, he hopes to address any additional concerns once Fernandez rejoins the squad. “I’ve spoken with Enzo and everyone involved, but those discussions need to remain confidential,” James added.
Chelsea will kick off their 2024/25 Premier League campaign against champions Manchester City.
