John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has unveiled a decisive plan to prohibit mining activities within forest reserves.

He made this announcement during a press briefing in Accra on Sunday.

Mahama emphasized that this initiative is crucial for safeguarding Ghana’s diverse biodiversity and addressing the harmful impacts of deforestation and habitat destruction.

Ghana’s forest reserves are home to a wide array of plant and animal species, many of which are endangered.

Mining operations in these areas pose a significant threat to these ecosystems. The proposed ban aims to preserve these critical habitats and promote sustainable practices within the mining industry.

“We will enforce a ban on mining in forest reserves,” stated Mr. Mahama.

The former President also underscored that his administration would not tolerate any involvement of public officials in small-scale mining activities.

He emphasized that those officials interested in such activities must choose between continuing in that sector or serving in his administration.

“We will not permit public officers to engage in small-scale mining,” he stated firmly.
