Winfried Schafer, the German coach, has pledged to lead Ghana to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup if appointed as the Black Stars coach by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Schafer emphasized that the Black Stars have underperformed in recent tournaments and expressed his commitment to developing a team capable of securing qualification for the World Cup if given the opportunity.
“The team hasn’t been that impressive in their recent tournaments and l am very ready to help build a good team and also ensure the team qualifies for the next FIFA world cup”, he sated.

Furthermore, Schafer showcased his familiarity with the Ghana Premier League, affirming his intention to closely monitor and extend call-ups to players from the competition if entrusted with the role of Ghana coach.
“l know the Ghana league has abundant top talents. A senior team coach needs to be in the country to monitor players and give call-ups to those performing well. l would spend much of my time in the country to help get qualified players in the league to be part of the black stars”, he added.
Winfried Schafer has applied for the vacant Black Stars job and is aspiring to secure the role. His experience in African football dates back to his tenure in Cameroon from 2001 to 2004.
According to a statement released by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, the FA’s Black Stars Coach Committee has compiled a list of qualified candidates for the position.
The GFA’s Executive Council is scheduled to review the list and subsequently announce the new technical team for the Black Stars.
