Andrew Egyapa Mercer, Member of Parliament for Sekondi, has expressed his gratitude to his constituents for the two-term opportunity to serve.
In an interview with Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show, Mercer acknowledged that the people of Sekondi carefully considered the campaign messages from both the NDC and NPP, ultimately choosing a different path.
Mercer contested the Sekondi parliamentary seat in the 2024 election against Mr. Blay Nyameke Armah of the National Democratic Congress. After the votes were counted, Mercer secured 11,084 votes, while Armah won with 14,558 votes.
“The people of Sekondi have spoken. They listened to both of us and decided my opponent should lead, and I’m grateful to them. They voted for me to serve them for two terms,” Mercer said on December 9.
He attributed his defeat to the overall low voter turnout in the 2024 general elections.
“People did not go out to vote and that was a general problem. Most of them believed they had not received any direct benefit from the Party after all the years and so they would not vote. I encountered many people of such”, he indicated.
Asked if he would make a comeback in 2028, he indicated “After the handing-over ceremony, I’m going back to my private life, I have a functional law firm to manage. I will also continue to assist those within my circles to the best of my ability. In principle, I don’t believe that if you go into an election and lose as a Member of Parliament, you come back again, but I work with a political party and if they want me to contest again, I shall engage and consult”.
