The Independence Day parades, traditionally held nationwide on March 6 to mark Ghana’s liberation from British rule in 1957, were canceled in Bawku due to ongoing insecurity in the area.

An official from the Bawku Municipal Education Directorate, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the parade has not been held in the municipality since 2022.

As a result, students in the area have been unable to actively participate in the annual celebrations.

Several schools in high-risk areas, including Gingande Primary and JHS, Daduri Primary and JHS, and Mujuduna Primary, continue to suffer from low attendance. Many of these schools are on the verge of collapse due to frequent raids and gun attacks.

Although violent incidents have decreased since late February, sporadic shootouts between rival factions still occur.

The curfew imposed on the area remains in effect from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., yet the town remains volatile, with residents largely divided along geographic lines based on security concerns.
