Famous Nollywood actress Ini Edo has lost the ownership of the Netflix original series ‘Shanty Town’ to Chineye ‘Chi Chi’ Nworah.

In a major legal win for Nworah and her production company, GCM Giant Creative Media Limited, the Nigerian Trademark Registry and the Nigerian Copyright Commission ruled against Edo.

This decision comes after Ini Edo and Minnie Empire Productions Limited (MEP) fought legal battles to claim the trademarks and copyrights for ‘Shanty Town.’

On January 10, 2024, the Trademark Registry turned down Ini Edo and Minnie Empire Productions Limited’s request to claim the trademarks ‘Scar’ and ‘Shanty Town,’ saying their case was not valid and confirming Chi Chi Nworah’s ownership of these trademarks.

Then, on July 24, 2024, the Nigerian Copyright Commission rejected Ini Edo and MEP’s attempt to cancel two copyright certificates given to Chinenye Nworah for “Shanty Town” in both literary and audiovisual formats. The NCC upheld the certificates and Nworah’s ownership.

The legal team at Olisa Agbakoba Legal was instrumental in these victories for Chinenye Nworah and GCM Giant Creative Media Limited.

‘Shanty Town,’ a popular six-part crime thriller released on January 20, 2023, features a star-studded cast including Chidi Mokeme, Ini Edo, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Sola Sobowale, Nancy Isime, Shaffy Bello, and Ali Nuhu.
