Neymar has had his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal terminated by mutual consent, following an injury-plagued spell at the club.

The 32-year-old Brazilian forward joined Al-Hilal in August 2023 for €90 million (£77.6 million), but has only featured in seven matches due to ongoing fitness issues.

Despite being the world’s most expensive player after his £200 million move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, Neymar’s time at Al-Hilal has been limited, with just two appearances this season, including a substitute role in November.

The club expressed its gratitude to Neymar for his contributions, wishing him success in his future endeavors. With about seven months remaining on his contract, which reportedly paid him €150 million (£129.2 million) annually, Neymar’s brief stint at Al-Hilal ends after injuries, including a ruptured ACL during a World Cup qualifier, kept him sidelined.

He has been strongly linked with a return to his former club, Santos in Brazil, as he looks to revive his career.

He returned in October last year and although he played down an apparent hamstring issue in his second match back, he has not featured since.

Neymar came through the youth system at Santos, where he scored 136 goals in 225 games, before a high-profile move to Barcelona in 2013.

He made 186 appearances across four seasons in Spain, winning two La Liga titles, the Champions League and the Club World Cup before his world-record move to PSG as a 25-year-old. In Paris he won five league titles prior to his move to Saudi Arabia.

Shortly after the move he overtook Pele to become Brazil’s all-time leading male goalscorer with 78 goals, but has not played for his country since his initial knee injury in 2023.
