Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, the convener of the Media Coalition against illegal mining, is urging the police to thoroughly investigate a statement made by Ernest Frimpong, the NPP’s 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for Amenfi East Constituency.
In a viral video, Frimpong allegedly encouraged illegal miners to attack security personnel who try to stop them, promising protection from himself, the MCE, and the Western Regional Minister.
Ashigbey wants the investigation to be thorough and brought to a logical conclusion.

Ernest Frimpong, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate, has clarified that his statements were misconstrued and did not intend to endorse or promote illegal mining (galamsey) or encourage miners to violently confront military personnel.
He claims his words were taken out of context and denies supporting or encouraging illegal activities.
The NPP Parliamentary Candidate, was arrested and granted bail after his controversial statements.
Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, convener of the Media Coalition against illegal mining, is pressing for a thorough investigation, saying he expects the police to take the matter “to its logical conclusion”.
Ashigbey wants the investigation to be comprehensive and thorough, to determine Frimpong’s intentions and ensure accountability.
Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey is decrying the lack of political will to combat galamsey (illegal mining), citing the devastating impact it’s having on cocoa farms and communities.
He notes that:
- 100 hectares of land in the Jomoro district are being destroyed by illegal miners.
- Cocoa production has declined by 40% between 2023 and 2024, partly due to illegal mining.
- Farms in cocoa-growing communities are being encroached upon for galamsey activities, causing irreversible damage.
- The ordinary Ghanaian is suffering as a result.
