Real Betis delivered a major blow to Real Madrid’s title defense in La Liga with a 2-1 victory at Benito Villamarin Stadium on Saturday.

Isco, who spent several successful years at Madrid before leaving in 2022, played a pivotal role, scoring the winning penalty against his former team.

The 32-year-old, who has been enjoying a resurgence at Betis after recovering from a broken leg, confidently converted from the spot early in the second half to secure a crucial win for the Andalusian side.

Madrid took the lead just 10 minutes into the match through Brahim Diaz, who finished a slick 19-pass team move after a brilliant ball from Kylian Mbappe to Ferland Mendy, who squared it to Diaz.

Betis, however, responded strongly. Johnny Cardoso equalized midway through the first half, rising above the Madrid defense to power home a header from an Isco corner, sending the home fans into raptures.

Despite Madrid dominating possession early on, Betis began to grow into the match, and Madrid struggled to create clear-cut chances.

The absence of the suspended Jude Bellingham, who has been a key figure in Madrid’s midfield this season, was felt as the team lacked fluidity and control.

Betis, meanwhile, were lively, with Antony (on loan from Manchester United) involved in several dangerous moments, and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois keeping his team in the game with crucial saves.

In the second half, Betis took the lead when Antonio Rudiger brought down Jesus Rodriguez inside the penalty area, and Isco stepped up to dispatch the penalty with composure.

Madrid had moments to respond, but Aurelien Tchouameni was fortunate to avoid a penalty for a foul on Ricardo Rodriguez in the box, and Cucho Hernandez’s shot narrowly missed the target.

Madrid’s manager Carlo Ancelotti made a change late in the game, bringing on Brazilian teenager Endrick to add fresh energy, but the teenager’s shot went wide, and Betis goalkeeper Adrian denied a fierce strike from Vinicius Jr. as Madrid’s efforts fell short.

The result leaves Real Madrid level on points with Barcelona at the top of the table, while Real Betis, buoyed by their win, move up in the standings.

Isco’s performance, capped by his decisive penalty, was a reminder of his quality and heart as he continues to shine for Betis.
