After banning hand luggage on flights to and from Italy for “health reasons” last month, the Italian government has now lifted the rule from July 15th.
Travellers will once again be allowed to take trolley cases and other hand luggage with them on board flights to and from Italy, a government minister confirmed on Wednesday. The measure, introduced on June 11th, prohibited the use of overhead lockers for any type of luggage. Italian authorities said the move was intended to prevent aisles being blocked by people stowing or retrieving bags.

From July 15th passengers can bring cabin baggage on board again, Italy’s undersecretary for health, Sandra Zampa, confirmed on Italy’s Radio Anch’io programme on Rai 1 on Tuesday.
Jackets and other small items must be placed in single-use sterilised containers, to be provided on the aircraft, Italian media reports.
Masks remain a requirement on flights and at airports. In June, Italy dropped the requirement for airlines to seat passengers at least one metre apart – which effectively halved the number of people who could board each flight – as long as the plane is equipped with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter.
