Renowned Ghanaian actress and media personality, Nana Ama McBrown, shared her experiences coping with the pressures and public scrutiny on social media during a live stream chat with her fans.
In response to a question about handling criticisms from the public, McBrown revealed that she has developed mental resilience to navigate negativity on social media. She emphasized the importance of discerning between constructive and baseless comments, stating, “If you are someone who cannot differentiate between rubbish and something sensible, it can lead to depression. You must be able to see the distinction. Here, everyone expresses their opinions, treating them as facts.”
McBrown admitted that when faced with negative comments, her strategy is to ignore them to prevent feelings of distress and potential depression. On the other hand, she appreciates and responds to positive comments, taking the time to engage with her supporters.
Acknowledging the challenges of dealing with critics and trolls on social media, McBrown highlighted the significance of self-awareness, urging individuals to know and accept themselves to resist the impact of negativity online. She stressed that it’s crucial not to let online opinions define one’s self-worth.
“Sometimes you may not be in a good mood, but they don’t care and still criticize you. You can’t explain it to everybody. You can’t always reply to that person who insulted you. So, know yourself. If the person isn’t bringing anything positive to your life, ignore it,” McBrown advised.
Nana Ama McBrown’s candid reflections shed light on the challenges faced by public figures dealing with online criticism and underscore the importance of prioritizing mental well-being in the face of social media negativity.
Her insights align with the growing chorus from other public figures, including Kuami Eugene and Funny Face, who have advocated for the mental health of celebrities.
