Jamie Carragher has named his all-time Liverpool XI, controversially including only two of his former teammates.

After rising through the academy ranks, Carragher made his first-team debut in January 1997 and spent 16 years at the club before retiring in 2013. During his time at Anfield, he played alongside elite players and won three League Cups, two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup, and notably, the Champions League.

However, in selecting his XI, he left out many of his old teammates.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher began with his goalkeeper and defense, starting with Ray Clemence, whom he chose over Alisson Becker for his trophy haul.

For right-back, he debated between Phil Neal and Trent Alexander-Arnold but ultimately picked Neal due to his four European Cup victories.

He paired Virgil van Dijk with Alan Hansen in central defense and opted for Steve Nicol at left-back, praising Nicol’s versatility and his combination with John Barnes in the late 80s.

Carragher’s choice of Barnes was expected, as he has often praised the winger’s technical skills and finishing ability, stating, “Technically, he’s the best player I’ve ever trained or played with.”

In midfield, Carragher included his second former teammate, Steven Gerrard, alongside Graeme Souness.

He also highlighted Mo Salah for the right side, acknowledging Ian Callaghan as another option but ultimately favoring Salah’s impact since joining the club.

Up front, Carragher chose Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush, noting that while Luis Suárez was a fantastic player, he couldn’t make the cut without a league title or a European Cup.

He reminisced about Rush’s memorable performances against Everton, which left a lasting impression on him as a young fan.

Overall, Carragher’s selections reflect his deep connection to Liverpool’s history and the impact of its legendary players.
