Bayer Leverkusen and Netherlands defender Jeremie Frimpong expressed his excitement upon arriving in Ghana for the first time on Sunday night.

Earlier in December, Frimpong, whose parents are Ghanaian, had expressed his eagerness to visit the country after Bayer Leverkusen’s victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League, hinting at his upcoming trip to Ghana.

On Sunday evening, the defender arrived at Kotoka International Airport for a one-week holiday and was warmly welcomed by fans.

“It’s amazing. To come to this welcoming atmosphere for the first time, it’s truly special. These are my people. I’m so happy to be here, so happy to see everyone. I’m just thrilled to be in Ghana,” Frimpong said, reflecting on the meaningful visit.

Although he represents the Netherlands on the international stage, Frimpong’s Ghanaian heritage is an integral part of his identity.

“I’ve always been connected to my Ghanaian roots. Both my parents are Ghanaians, I eat Ghanaian food, I speak the language, so I feel like I’ve always been connected, but obviously being here makes it extra special,” he said.

“I have to come to Ghana; this is where I am from. My blood is Ghanaian blood, so for sure I had to come here one day, and this is the right time to come,” he added.

Jeremie Frimpong has been an important part of Leverkusen’s setup and played a key role in the German club winning the Bundesliga last term.

His 16-goal contributions saw the Germ an club finish the season on an undefeated run en route to their first Bundesliga crown.
