Former President John Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticized President Akufo-Addo for sparking diplomatic tension with neighboring Burkina Faso.

At a press conference on August 7, Mahama attributed the tension to Akufo-Addo’s remarks at the 2023 US-Africa Leaders Summit, where he alleged Burkina Faso’s involvement with Russian mercenaries and the Wagner Forces.
Mahama emphasized the need to resolve this diplomatic strain, pledging that an NDC government would mend relations with Burkina Faso.
He expressed concern about the current government’s handling of regional relations, stating, “Instead of fostering cooperation, our president’s reckless comments have created unnecessary tension with our neighbor.”
Mahama highlighted the importance of regional solidarity, particularly in addressing shared challenges.
“We should be collaborating closely with Burkina Faso, but unfortunately, this government’s actions have jeopardized our relationship,” he noted.
Despite Akufo-Addo’s apology, Mahama stressed that more effort is required to repair the diplomatic damage.
“When we assume office, we’ll prioritize dialogue with our neighbors to restore strong ties and promote regional cooperation,” he assured.
Mahama criticized Akufo-Addo’s comments, emphasizing the need for diplomatic repair and regional collaboration, and pledged to address these issues if elected.
