Jordan Ayew has been officially named as the captain of the Black Stars ahead of their crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger this month.

Head coach Otto Addo confirmed that Ayew will lead the team for the upcoming matches, which are pivotal for Ghana’s qualification bid.

The Black Stars are facing a challenging situation, having failed to win any of their last four matches in the qualifiers.

The first match will be against Angola in Luanda on November 15, followed by a home game against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on November 18.

Ayew’s appointment comes after a period of uncertainty regarding the captaincy, especially following the absence of Thomas Partey and the temporary leadership of Mohammed Kudus earlier in the qualifiers.

Coach Addo has clarified that while Kudus will remain as second captain, Jordan Ayew, with his vast experience, will now assume the role of captain.

In terms of squad selection, the 23-man squad for these critical qualifiers includes familiar faces such as Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, and Majeed Ashimeru, while Inaki Williams makes his return to the fold.

Notably, Thomas Partey has been omitted due to ongoing fitness concerns.

The Black Stars must win both matches and rely on Sudan failing to secure further points to maintain their qualification hopes for the 2025 tournament.
