The Director of Legal Education and head of the Ghana School of Law, Justice Nana Barima Yaw Kodie Oppong, has announced he will vacate his position at the end of this month.
His final day in office will be Sunday, August 31, 2025.
In a notice to students on Tuesday, August 12, Justice Oppong expressed deep gratitude to God “for His love, guidance, and protection over the past three years.”
He revealed that although he had hoped to complete his full term or at least see through the current academic year and the upcoming Call to the Bar ceremony, “sadly that was not to be.”
He extended his best wishes to Part II students, voicing his “earnest prayer” that all will be called to the Bar in October, and encouraged Part I students to persevere and advance to the next stage of their studies. Justice Oppong also urged students to extend “even greater respect, cooperation, and support” to his successor, as well as to the management and staff of the institution.
“May God richly bless you all and grant us success in every endeavour. Thank you,” he concluded.
Justice Yaw Oppong, who also serves as the Manwerehene of Akyem Abuakwa, was appointed Director of Legal Education and Director of the Ghana School of Law in December 2022. During his tenure, he oversaw significant academic and administrative reforms aimed at improving professional legal training in Ghana.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggest that Professor Raymond A. Atuguba, a Professor of Law and former Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, is likely to succeed Justice Oppong.
Sources indicate that the General Legal Council is expected to finalise the appointment before the start of the new Legal Year and the enrolment of new lawyers in October.
Professor Atuguba, known for his reformist approach to legal education, recently concluded his tenure as Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, where he was succeeded by Professor Peter Atudiwe Atupare.
If appointed, he will bring his academic leadership and advocacy for innovation in legal practice to the Ghana School of Law.
