On Sunday, Kamala Harris’s campaign announced that it raised $200 million and signed up 170,000 new volunteers in the week since she became the Democratic presidential candidate.

This comes as Republicans continue to criticize her vice presidential record.

Last week, President Joe Biden ended his re-election bid and endorsed Harris for the November 5 election against former President Donald Trump. Harris’s deputy campaign manager, Rob Flaherty, shared on X that 66% of the $200 million raised came from new donors.

Recent polls, including one by Reuters/Ipsos, show Harris and Trump are nearly tied, setting up a close race as the election approaches.

Trump’s campaign reported raising $331 million in the second quarter of the year, more than the $264 million raised by Biden’s campaign and its allies. At the end of June, Trump’s campaign had $284.9 million in cash, while the Democratic campaign had $240 million.

Harris has the support of most delegates for the Democratic National Convention, making her the likely nominee.

The official vote will happen on August 1, according to Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison.

Biden withdrew from the race due to concerns about his age and health after a poor debate performance against Trump. Biden has promised to remain in office until his term ends on January 20, 2025.

Harris’s campaign has gained momentum and improved the situation after doubts about Biden’s chances of winning. Polls now show a closer race, with some even indicating Harris leading.

Republican attacks on Harris, the first woman and first Black and South Asian vice president, have increased. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis criticized her and suggested Democrats are trying to distance her from Biden’s policies.

Some Trump allies worry that negative remarks about Harris could harm Trump’s appeal to Black voters.

Harris’s campaign has not yet responded to these comments, but campaign co-chair Mitch Landrieu praised Harris’s performance, calling it one of the best in recent political history.
