The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has refuted social media claims alleging extortion and unfair treatment by Customs officers at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) after a traveller was charged GH¢12,690.63 as import duty.
In a press release issued on Thursday, December 11, 2025, the Authority acknowledged the traveller’s discomfort but stressed that the widely circulated account misrepresented the facts of the incident.
According to the GRA, the traveller arrived in Ghana on December 5, 2025, with 18 mobile phones and several electronic accessories—quantities that exceed the allowable personal concession under the Exemptions Act, 2022 (Act 1083).
The Authority explained that the goods were not declared on arrival, prompting Customs officers to issue a Bill of Entry (BOE No. 41225803295) in line with standard procedures. Duty was subsequently assessed and processed through the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS), after which an official receipt was issued.
The GRA emphasised that, contrary to the traveller’s online claims, no extortion occurred, adding that Customs officers acted lawfully and professionally throughout the process.
The Authority further noted that the traveller was not detained, his goods were not confiscated, and all procedures applied are standard for travellers carrying items in commercial quantities.
“All actions taken were consistent with customs regulations and the laws governing imports,” the statement said.
The GRA used the opportunity to remind members of the public—especially returning travellers—to declare all dutiable goods, particularly those in commercial quantities, to avoid inconvenience.
Travellers with concerns or questions are encouraged to engage Customs officers upon arrival for clarification.
The Authority reiterated its commitment to transparency, fairness and efficient service delivery at all ports of entry.
