The union of the Ghana Airport Company has ordered a four-hour halt of the strike, after announcing on Thursday, 26 February, that it would be going on a warning strike over alleged mismanagement.

The General Secretary Bernard Adjei proceeded to the Jubilee House to discuss their request for the removal of Managing Director Mr. Yaw Kwakwa.

According to media report, if the primary purpose of the meeting is not met, the strike will resume with full force after the 4-hour freeze.

This unfortunate incident has ultimately caused a lot of ruins to some daily routine of the airport, including the cancellation of some international flights.

Irate workers at the Airport Friday morning locked out the embattled Managing Director, Mr Yaw Kwakwa, demanding his immediate resignation. At the same time, a lot of passengers on Friday morning have been left stranded following the strike.

BACKGROUND

A statement issued Thursday directed all general staff to withdraw their services at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) from 06:00hrs Friday, 26th February 2021, until otherwise communicated by the Union.

The statement further added that the “action has become necessary following the Boards attempt to shelve the report of an investigative committee comprising the Ministry of Aviation, the Board, Senior Management, and the Public Services Workers Union which confirms the allegations of mismanagement and abuse of office levelled against the Managing Director, Mr Yaw Kwakwa.”

The affected services shall include; Screening of pre-board passengers and access control, Fire/Safety cover for all aircraft, Water supply and sewage treatment and Public announcement and flight display.
