Journalist Kofi Adu Domfeh has been elected as the new Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), following a decisive victory in a rerun election held on Friday, August 22, 2025.

Domfeh secured 20 out of 31 valid votes, defeating his sole opponent, Georgina Ama Ankomah, who garnered 11 votes. Election officials confirmed that there were no rejected ballots, with all votes counted as valid, an indication of a transparent process under stricter guidelines.

The rerun was necessitated by an earlier decision of the GJA Elections Dispute Adjudication Committee (EDAC), which nullified the original June 30, 2025, elections. That election was plagued by irregularities, including breaches of the GJA constitution and disputes over voter eligibility. One major concern was that a journalist registered in the Greater Accra Region was allowed to cast a ballot in the Ashanti elections.

In its ruling, EDAC directed the conduct of a fresh election within 14 working days, mandating strict compliance measures. These included no supplementary voter lists, publication of a certified final voter register ahead of the polls, and closer monitoring to safeguard the integrity of the process.

The rerun election, supervised by the GJA National Elections Committee, was conducted peacefully, with representatives of both candidates and observers present.

With this victory, Kofi Adu Domfeh becomes the Chairman-elect for the Ashanti Region, bringing closure to weeks of electoral tension and uncertainty. His win also reaffirms the GJA’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and internal democratic governance.

In his acceptance remarks, Domfeh expressed gratitude to members for their confidence in him and pledged to work toward strengthening professionalism, defending press freedom, and enhancing the welfare of journalists in the region.

“This victory is not mine alone; it is a call to duty. Together, we will build a stronger GJA in Ashanti and ensure that the Association remains the true voice of journalists,” he said.

Meanwhile, Georgina Ama Ankomah, who conceded defeat, congratulated Domfeh and urged members to rally behind the new chairman for the progress of the Association.

The GJA leadership in Accra has welcomed the outcome, describing it as a step toward restoring credibility and unity within the Association, especially as it prepares to address pressing industry challenges such as journalist welfare, safety, and media ethics.
