In a historic move, Dr. Kwesi Eduafo Yankey has been sworn in as the first-ever Chancellor of Koforidua Technical University (KTU), marking a significant milestone in the university’s growth and aspirations.

Dr. Yankey, a seasoned entrepreneur and philanthropist with over 40 years of experience across various industries, brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the role.

At his investiture ceremony held at the Abba Bentil Hall, Dr. Yankey outlined his vision for KTU, which revolves around key pillars such as innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability, industry partnerships, infrastructure development, and creating an enhanced student experience.

He emphasized that his leadership would be aimed at transforming Koforidua Technical University into a hub for academic excellence and a center for fostering technical innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable practices.

Dr. Yankey spoke passionately about his goals to equip students with the skills and confidence necessary to thrive in the global marketplace. He said the university would not only focus on academic excellence but would also integrate sustainability into operations, research, and curriculum.

This approach, he believes, will ensure that students are prepared to lead in a rapidly changing world, one that demands expertise in new technologies, environmental stewardship, and resource efficiency.

He called for collaboration among university faculty, students, and staff, stressing the importance of unity in diversity. Dr. Yankey noted that KTU’s diverse community should be a strength, fostering creativity and innovation. He urged all stakeholders to embrace a culture of empathy, inclusivity, and mutual support to achieve the university’s goals.

Dr. Yankey also reaffirmed his commitment to the university’s vision of creating a world-class institution that is recognized for its contribution to national development and global innovation.

“Together, we will make Koforidua Technical University a place where creativity thrives, entrepreneurship flourishes, and sustainable practices are at the core of everything we do,” he stated.

The event was graced by Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who offered warm congratulations to Dr. Yankey on his new appointment. The former president commended Dr. Yankey’s leadership and urged him to stay committed to the values of excellence, innovation, and sustainability.

He expressed his confidence that Dr. Yankey’s leadership would continue to shape the future of KTU and help the institution adapt to the challenges and opportunities brought by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Kufuor emphasized the importance of technical education in driving Ghana’s competitiveness and economic growth in the face of rapidly evolving global trends.

In his speech, Dr. Kufuor also underscored the importance of preparing students for the future by embracing technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and blockchain. These technologies, he noted, will play a pivotal role in transforming industrial outputs and boosting Ghana’s position in global markets.

Dr. Yankey, who is also the Board Chairman of several companies, including SUNU Assurance Limited, Zeepay Ghana, and the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, brings a broad range of expertise to the position. His leadership is expected to not only uplift the institution but also position it as a major contributor to the country’s drive for innovation and development.

Dr. Yankey’s extensive career spans various fields, from banking to construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and education.

His entrepreneurial ventures include Dumakwae Limited, Barrett Industries Limited, and Barrett Farms Limited. He has served in numerous leadership roles, contributing significantly to various sectors.

His distinguished service to Ghana was recognized when he was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree by the University of Ghana in 2023. In December 2022, Dr. Yankey was enstooled as Agonahene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, taking on the stool name Nana Kwesi Boama.

As Koforidua Technical University’s first Chancellor, Dr. Yankey’s vision for the future will be critical in shaping the university’s path toward becoming a leading technical institution in Africa, contributing to Ghana’s industrial growth and preparing students to excel in the ever-evolving global economy.
