West Ham United Vice-Chair, Karren Brady, has revealed that Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Kudus’ dip in form during the 2024/2025 season was a key factor in the club’s decision to sanction his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.

Speaking in an interview with TalkSport, Brady explained that while financial regulations under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) required West Ham to balance their books through player sales, Kudus’ underwhelming performances in his second season made the decision easier.

“The financial restraints, the PSR and all the rules and regulations in football mean that you have to do some trading. That’s just the way it is. All clubs are having to do it. So that was the decision made,” she said. “Kudus didn’t particularly have a good season for West Ham last year by his own standards. So we looked to move him on.”

The Ghanaian international joined Spurs this summer in a six-year deal worth £55 million, ending his two-year spell with the Hammers. Kudus, who had impressed in his debut season—finishing second in the club’s Player of the Season voting—struggled to replicate that form in the following campaign. Despite playing 32 league matches, he managed only three assists and failed to register a single goal contribution in key fixtures.

By contrast, his impact at Tottenham has been immediate. In his Premier League debut for the North London club, Kudus set up two goals in a convincing 3-0 victory over Burnley, quickly winning over Spurs supporters and raising questions about whether West Ham might regret letting him go.

The move highlights the financial and performance pressures facing Premier League clubs as they strive to remain competitive while adhering to strict financial rules. For Kudus, the switch to Spurs represents a fresh opportunity to reignite his form in the English top flight and cement his reputation as one of Ghana’s brightest footballing exports.
