Renowned African filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has shared photos of his location scouting in Ghana for season 2 of the Netflix series Aníkúlápó.

In June, the Nigerian director announced his intention to film parts of the award-winning series in Ghana.

This exciting update has garnered attention with the recent photos he posted on his Instagram page, highlighting his location scouting efforts.

In movie production, location scouting, or location recce, is an essential pre-production step. It involves identifying and assessing potential filming sites to ensure they meet both the creative vision and logistical requirements of the project.

Afolayan revealed his plans to film parts of his series in Ghana at the Nigeria International Film and TV Summit (NIFS) in Cannes, France, in June.

The event was attended by various film industry leaders and media figures, including Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, CEO of Ghana’s National Film Authority.

Ghana is actively encouraging filmmakers from around the globe to take advantage of its breathtaking landscapes and excellent facilities through the “Shoot in Ghana” initiative. This effort, led by the National Film Authority, aims to highlight Ghana’s heritage and culture while generating employment for locals.

In an Instagram post, Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante expressed her excitement, saying, “Ghana invites the world to come and shoot here, capturing the stunning sceneries and top-notch facilities we have to offer.”

The National Film Authority is excited to collaborate with Kunle Afolayan, a notable figure in African cinema, to film scenes of Aníkúlápó in Ghana.

Aníkúlápó is a four-part series that follows the 2022 Netflix original film of the same name. The series continues the story of Saro, a stranger and traditional textile weaver, who arrives in Oyo and becomes involved in an unexpected romantic affair with Queen Arolake.

The first season was entirely filmed at the Kunle Afolayan Production (KAP) Film Village in Igbojaye, Oyo State, with a cast and crew of 600.
