Professor Kingsley Nyarko, the Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, has been taken into custody, according to reports. The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) effected the arrest, as revealed by UTV on X.

The incident is allegedly connected to a suspected corruption case involving the MP, which was captured on video during the Ejisu by-election on April 30, 2024.

Following a referral from the Electoral Commission, the OSP has launched an investigation into the matter, which pertains to corruption during a public election.

Sources close to the investigation, as reported by (link unavailable), have revealed that OSP investigators have questioned several individuals implicated in the case, regarding the corruption allegations.

It is worth recalling that Professor Kingsley Nyarko was seen on live television placing a white envelope containing money on a table where two EC officials were seated during the Ejisu by-election. The Kwadaso MP later clarified that the money was intended as lunch for the EC officials.

In response to the incident, the Electoral Commission issued a statement announcing the suspension of the two officials involved – Regina Serwaa, a Ballot Issuer, and George Sau, the Presiding Officer at the Church of Pentecost Polling Station at Fumesua, Ejisu – and initiated an investigation into their conduct. The Commission also requested a criminal investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, Professor Kingsley Nyarko has maintained that his actions were done in good faith, contrary to reports suggesting that the money was intended to bribe or influence the officials.

Additionally, Election Watch Ghana, a civil society organization, has filed a petition with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate the MP’s involvement in the incident.
