Felix Kwakye Ofosu, former Deputy Communications Minister, has thrown down the gauntlet to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, challenging him to enumerate specific investments made in Ghana’s digital infrastructure over the past seven years.

Kwakye Ofosu dismisses Dr. Bawumia’s self-proclaimed pioneering role in transforming the sector as disingenuous and troubling.

Speaking on NDC360, a political talk show, Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that digitalization is a product of technological evolution, requiring a solid foundation.

He argued that President John Mahama took bold steps to leverage technological innovation for economic opportunities and improved governance.

Kwakye Ofosu disputed Dr. Bawumia’s claim that the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government has outperformed any government since independence in issuing fibre optic network licenses.

He pointed out that five out of six licences were issued under the NPP since 2017, but this overlooks critical issues.

The former Deputy Communications Minister highlighted John Mahama’s significant public investments in critical digital infrastructure, including a 1000km Rural Fibre Network, a 300km Metro Fibre Network, and an LTE/4G network with over 119 Base Stations.

These investments have provided internet and voice call services to millions of Ghanaians, facilitated research and learning, and supported government institutions.

Kwakye Ofosu also corrected the misconception that only six companies have been issued terrestrial fibre optic cable licenses, listing 13 licensed companies, including Vodafone Ghana, Glo Mobile, and MainOne.

He dared the NPP and Dr. Bawumia to provide evidence, offering additional proof with dates on when each company received their operational licenses, some dating back to February 2004.
