Deputy CEO of the Ghana Gaming Commission, Lamtiig Apanga, has expressed strong support for the proposals presented by the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) to President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, December 23.
Apanga said while Ghana’s 1992 Constitution has served the country well, it is long overdue for a comprehensive overhaul to align with the current political and governance landscape.
He highlighted the Constitution’s enduring relevance and positive impact over the years, urging stakeholders to ensure the committee’s recommendations are implemented for the nation’s benefit.
He also commended President Mahama for establishing the CRC, describing the initiative as a demonstration of strong leadership.
“Looking at some of the recommendations that have been made, they are extremely significant. The 1992 Constitution has been the longest-serving constitution in Ghana. In all fairness, we should celebrate it in an elegant manner, given that it has provided one of the best political stabilities, even within the West African subregion. We have endured the best democratic transitions,” Apanga said.
The CRC’s report includes over 100 recommendations, notably a five-year presidential tenure, the creation of an Independent Registrar and Regulator of Political Parties and Campaigns (IRRPC) to strengthen regulation of political parties and campaigns, and reducing the presidential age limit from 40 to 30.
