Lawyers for Brigadier General Michael Kwadwo Opoku have strongly dismissed widespread reports alleging that the senior military officer was arrested by National Security operatives.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, and signed by legal counsel Gary Nimako Marfo, the legal team described the publication originally carried by Opera News as “false, defamatory, and reckless.”
The report had suggested that Brigadier General Opoku was linked to the discovery of a cache of ammunition following a National Security operation. His lawyers, however, categorically denied the claims, stressing that their client had not been arrested nor connected to any such incident.
According to the lawyers, the report was not only misleading but also sought to tarnish the reputation of a respected officer of the Ghana Armed Forces who has served the country with integrity.
“Our client’s attention has been drawn to a defamatory publication on your online news portal in which you alleged that he was arrested following a National Security operation that uncovered ammunition. We wish to state emphatically that this is untrue. It is unethical journalism for such a serious allegation to be published without the most basic verification,” the statement noted.
The legal team has since demanded an immediate apology and a full retraction from Opera News, warning that failure to comply could trigger legal action.
They further urged media houses to uphold the principles of responsible journalism, especially in matters involving national security and the reputation of public officials, in order to avoid unnecessary public panic and character assassination.
This clarification comes amid growing concerns about the spread of unverified information on digital platforms, a trend lawyers argue poses a significant threat to both professional reputations and public trust in the media.
