The Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly has undertaken a massive clean-up operation in the Akro East and Akro West Electoral Areas as part of preparations for the 2025 Teshie Homowo Festival.

The exercise, held on Monday, August 11, was spearheaded by the Assembly’s Presiding Member, Samuel Kwashie Tawiah, who stood in for the Municipal Chief Executive. He was joined by key community leaders, including Charles Ashie Kotey, Assembly Member for Agblezaa and Chairman of the Sanitation and Environmental Health Sub-Committee; Joseph Tetteh Nortey (popularly known as Walamantse), Assembly Member for Akro East; and Awula Anita Ayorkor Adjetey, the Municipal Cultural Officer.

Mr. Tawiah explained that the clean-up was designed to improve environmental sanitation, beautify the township, and create a pleasant atmosphere for both residents and visitors during the Homowo festivities. He stressed that maintaining cleanliness ahead of major cultural celebrations is essential for preserving public health and enhancing the community’s image.

Speaking on the sidelines, Mr. Kotey revealed that this was not an isolated initiative. Similar sanitation exercises have already been carried out in other parts of the municipality as part of the President’s “Reset Agenda” on sanitation, a campaign championed by President John Dramani Mahama to instill discipline and sustainability in waste management.

Municipal Cultural Officer, Awula Anita Ayorkor Adjetey, underscored the cultural and economic importance of the exercise, noting that a clean environment is key to attracting tourists during the Homowo season.

“Tourists are sure to send a good name when they experience hospitality in a clean environment,” she said, adding that sustained community involvement in sanitation efforts would ensure the long-term benefits of such initiatives.

The Teshie Homowo Festival, one of the Ga people’s most celebrated traditional events, draws hundreds of visitors each year. With the clean-up campaign underway, the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly hopes to present a vibrant, welcoming, and hygienic environment that reflects the pride and heritage of the Teshie community.
