Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged the majority caucus to rally behind Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister of Energy, as the proposed running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

This appeal follows a private meeting held on Friday, June 28, where Afenyo-Markin and other senior majority caucus members met with Dr. Bawumia to discuss his choice of running mate for the upcoming 2024 elections.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News, Afenyo-Markin advised his fellow New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs to be cautious in their public statements, warning that careless remarks could harm their party’s chances in the 2024 general elections.

“I would want to strongly make this case that we’re in this together… None is perfect in this whole game, we may have our individual differences. And once a decision is made, it is made, we must all rally behind him, and make sure that we do the right thing,” Afenyo-Markin.

He also acknowledged that other capable NPP members, such as Osei Adutwum, the Education Minister, and Bryan Acheampong, the Minister for Agriculture, were also considered strong contenders for the position, demonstrating the party’s depth of talent and potential for leadership.

“These were all individuals he was strongly considering, but in the end, he had to make a final decision and it fell on our brother.

“I would also want to encourage all colleagues who are desperate as being considered to see it as God’s own decision that the mountain has fallen on Napo, we have to move on as a party.

“As for politics you never know what will happen tomorrow. When today is not your day, you take it easy and wait for your turn or another day for God’s own decision.
