WhatsApp will no longer be supported on 18 Android models and 3 iPhone models starting in 2025, as compatibility with older operating systems is phased out.
With the New Year comes a change that will affect those clinging to their aging smartphones. WhatsApp will cease supporting Android’s KitKat OS and earlier versions from January 1, 2025. Users with devices running these older systems will no longer be able to use the app unless they can update to a newer OS.

However, many older phones no longer receive official updates from their manufacturers, making such updates nearly impossible without risking the phone’s functionality.
The following Android models will be affected by this change:
Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
WhatsApp’s owner, Meta, states that these updates are necessary to ensure security and compatibility with newer devices.
In mid-2025, iPhone users will also face a similar issue. From May 5, WhatsApp will no longer support iPhones running iOS versions earlier than 15.1.
While some users with older iPhones can update to newer iOS versions, those with devices still on iOS 12.5.7 will not be able to upgrade, leaving them unable to use the app.
The phones in this category that can still use WhatsApp now but won’t be able to from May 5 are the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. These changes affect both the regular WhatsApp application and WhatsApp Business, which has the same system requirements.
