Liverpool finally broke their Champions League curse against Real Madrid, earning a decisive 2-0 win at Anfield to maintain their perfect record in this year’s competition.

The victory, which ended an eight-game winless streak against the Spanish giants, including defeats in two finals—marked another milestone in head coach Arne Slot’s impressive tenure since succeeding Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds started the match with intensity, pinning Carlo Ancelotti’s side back for long periods and creating a host of chances. Alexis Mac Allister broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute with a low, precise strike across Thibaut Courtois, sending the Kop into raptures.

Real Madrid had a golden opportunity to equalize when Andy Robertson brought down Lucas Vazquez in the box.

However, Kylian Mbappe’s penalty was brilliantly saved by Caoimhin Kelleher, preserving Liverpool’s lead.

Minutes later, Mohamed Salah earned a penalty after being fouled by Ferland Mendy, but he uncharacteristically blasted his effort wide, missing the chance to double the advantage.

Liverpool kept pushing and finally put the game to bed in the 76th minute. Substitute Cody Gakpo rose highest to meet Robertson’s pinpoint cross, heading past Courtois to seal the win.

The result solidified Liverpool’s position at the top of the Champions League group with five wins from five matches, while Real Madrid now faces an uphill battle to secure a playoff spot in the tournament’s new format.
