The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly has demolished all structures and shops recently rebuilt at the Madina Redco slum.

The exercise followed the Assembly’s earlier declaration of the area as a security zone, citing recurring fire outbreaks, the most recent on August 3, 2025.

Authorities had warned that encroachers who ignored the directive would face arrest and prosecution.

During the operation, three people were arrested for resisting law enforcement officers.

Some affected traders expressed frustration on Friday, September 12, accusing the Assembly of unfairness.

One trader told Citi News: “We got here at dawn and realised the military and police had taken over the place, demolishing the structures. We even pleaded with them to allow us to take our stock, but they failed. I have lost millions of cedis.”

Another victim, Emmanuel Kumi, lamented, “This is so unfair. We also voted for the government. Not everyone here is involved in the sale of contraband goods.”

However, some residents welcomed the Assembly’s action, describing the slum as a hub for unauthorised activities.

“They failed to adhere to the order by the Assembly not to rebuild. The business here was not good; it was making the youth go astray. I’m really happy if it’s used for proper business rather than what it was previously used for,” one resident said.
