President-elect John Dramani Mahama has officially met with outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to inaugurate the 2024 National Transition Team, marking a significant step in Ghana’s democratic process.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, December 11, at the Jubilee House in Accra, signifies the commencement of an organized and peaceful transition of power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The National Transition Team, a constitutionally mandated body, will oversee the handover process. Its responsibilities include briefing the incoming government on key state matters, facilitating access to critical government data, and coordinating the formal inauguration of the President-elect.

This meeting highlights Ghana’s strong democratic tradition, where outgoing and incoming administrations work together to uphold the nation’s governance framework.

Addressing attendees, President-elect Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to fostering unity and stability as the NDC prepares to assume office.

“Mr. President has given me a brief on the security situation, both internal and external, and also a short brief on issues having to do with the economy. The transitional teams will drill down further into these matters, and we are going to work together in the interest of Ghana to ensure a seamless transition.”

Outgoing President Akufo-Addo expressed similar sentiments, emphasising the importance of continuity and cooperation.

“I assure him [John Dramani Mahama] of my full support and that of my government over the transitional process to make sure that his administration takes off in the best of condition.”
