The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has proposed the formation of a committee to explore potential pension scheme models for former Members of Parliament (MPs).

Ayariga suggested that the scheme be funded through proceeds from carbon credits, aiming to provide financial support for former lawmakers who may face difficult financial circumstances.

In a formal statement delivered on the floor of Parliament on January 29, Ayariga called on the House to adopt the initiative.

“I’m proposing to this House for us to design a pension scheme that will cater for the needs of MPs when they decide not to run again.

“Or they lose their elections and they’re no longer here in this house. Mr Speaker, it’s a noble thing to serve your constituency in this house. And sometimes people serve for a very long time.

“I know of colleagues in this house who have been here for the past 24 years. And yet, those people leave this house without adequate pension arrangements to cater for their needs so that they can live in dignity.”
