President John Dramani Mahama has honoured three Ghana Air Force personnel who perished in the August 6 military helicopter crash with posthumous promotions, describing the gesture as a testament to their “unwavering service and sacrifice to the nation.”
Speaking as Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces at an interfaith funeral service held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Independence Square in Accra, President Mahama paid tribute to the officers, emphasising that their dedication to duty represented the very best of Ghana’s military tradition.
The solemn state ceremony brought together senior government officials, members of the military high command, traditional leaders, clergy, foreign dignitaries, and grieving families, with hundreds of citizens lining the square to pay their last respects. Military pallbearers, draped in ceremonial uniforms, escorted the caskets — each adorned with the national flag — while a gun salute echoed through the air in their honour.
The servicemen recognised were: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala – Posthumously promoted to Wing Commander, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu – Posthumously promoted to Flight Lieutenant, Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah – Posthumously promoted to Flight Sergeant.
President Mahama said the promotions were a small but significant way of preserving their legacies, noting that they “died in the line of duty, defending and serving Ghana with professionalism, courage, and honour.” “These men represented the strength and resilience of our armed forces,” he said. “Though they are no longer with us, their names will remain etched in the history of Ghana as heroes who gave their all for their country.”
The President reaffirmed the government’s support for the bereaved families, pledging financial and welfare assistance. He assured them that the Ghana Armed Forces would stand by them, ensuring that the officers’ children and dependants receive the care and opportunities their loved ones would have wished for them.
The promotions, Mahama explained, not only reflect the officers’ merit and service records but also serve as a symbolic reminder to the entire nation of the sacrifices made by military personnel in the line of duty.
The August 6 crash, which claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians including three top government officials and the Air Force crew — has been described as one of the most devastating incidents in recent military history.
Investigations into the cause of the tragedy are ongoing, but the incident has already sparked national discussions about aviation safety and the risks faced by those serving in high-security assignments.
President Mahama concluded his tribute with a message of unity: “In this moment of grief, let us not only mourn their passing but also draw inspiration from their courage. May their dedication remind us of the values of patriotism, discipline, and selflessness that strengthen our nation.”
