John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the current state of democracy in Ghana, declaring that it has become a poor example.

Speaking during a campaign event in Bimbila on October 29.
Mahama accused President Akufo-Addo’s administration of undermining the independence of the judiciary and damaging state institutions.
He claimed that Ghana was once viewed as a model of democracy but has now fallen into a negative state.
Mahama alleged that the Akufo-Addo government has filled the judiciary with judges sympathetic to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), pointing out that approximately 80 to 100 judges have been appointed with NPP affiliations to avoid accountability when they are no longer in power.
Mahama’s comments highlight a broader criticism of the government’s actions regarding judicial independence and institutional integrity, raising concerns about the implications for democracy in Ghana as the nation approaches elections.
