Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the government’s handling of flood prevention and management, citing the recent heavy downpours in Accra and other parts of the country as evidence of their failures.

Despite allegedly investing huge sums of money in flood prevention interventions, the government has failed to effectively prevent and manage floods, leading to widespread destruction and loss of life.

In a Facebook post, Mahama expressed his concern about the government’s priorities, stating that protecting lives and properties should be a top priority.

He highlighted the government’s alleged spending of $200 million on the Greater Accra Resilient Integrated Development Programme (GARID) and the recent approval of an additional $150 million for the same programme, questioning the impact of these investments.

Mahama emphasized that a comprehensive flood prevention and management plan is crucial, and pledged that an NDC government under his leadership would prioritize finding an engineering solution to the persistent flooding and implement effective prevention and management measures.

He outlined a commitment to investing in sustainable drainage systems, clearing structures in waterways, proper waste management, and proactive measures to mitigate the impact of heavy rains.

He concluded by urging Ghanaians to unite and work together to build a safer and more resilient Ghana, emphasizing the importance of collective action and voices in bringing about real change and solutions.
