President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to amend the holiday act to include an additional holiday for Eid ul Fitr.
Speaking at the National Prayers and Thanksgiving service at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, on Friday, January 10, 2025, Mahama reiterated his commitment to fulfilling promises made to the Muslim community during his election campaign. He confirmed that the amendment will be prioritized once Parliament reconvenes.

“We promised to add one more holiday to Eid al Fitr. So, as soon as Parliament settles, we’ll amend the holiday act to include an extra holiday for the occasion. This year, after the Ramadan fast, we will have two holidays,” he said.
This move will grant Muslims two holidays to celebrate Sallah.
John Mahama also expressed gratitude to the National Chief Imam, Sheik Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, and the entire Muslim community for their support and prayers throughout the election period.
General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, also appealed to the Islamic group for continuous prayers for the President’s tenure.
